For Michael Salvatore, a specialist in Amgen's pilot plant, working in drug development is personal. As a high school senior Michael lost his grandmother to cancer. Two years later his grandfather died of heart disease. These experiences cemented Michael's interest in medicine and his decision to study bioengineering. "One of the reasons I came to Amgen was their focus on cancer research and treating cancer patients," says Michael. "Everything I've ever been or done goes back to my grandma and grandpa." Through college and graduate studies, Michael focused his research on cardiovascular disease, even forming a small company with one of his professors working with regenerative medicine. After five years in the industry, Michael came to Amgen. "It's a very exciting role for me. I get to be both a scientist and an engineer, because we're doing a lot of rapid problem solving for processes and equipment," says Michael who works in the intermediary between a drug's discovery phase and full-scale production. "Everyone is given an opportunity to contribute their expertise in decision making, and there is a real focus on scientific justification." Michael also participates in a mentorship program with Amgen's Early Career Professionals (AECP) Employee Resource Group (ERG). "I'd always wanted a mentor, but didn't know how to get one," says Michael. "This is a well-structured program and has been a worthwhile investment of my time. I've learned to say yes to opportunities where I can really deliver results." For a life-long learner like Michael, Amgen offers more than an exciting job. "Everyone here is so smart and humble. You can learn so much so fast when you open yourself up to the opportunity," says Michael. "It's almost like college-there are senior scientists, rotational programs and academic seminars-but with one key difference. At Amgen, everything we do is focused on getting medicine to patients who need it."
