by larger city-funded systems such as the transit systems in San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, throughout the Los Angeles Airport (LAX) and in select hospitals. ShakeAlert's capabilities were put up to its biggest test yet when it detected the possibility of large seismic activity near the Truckee area of Northern California. Though the shaking was, thankfully, not too severe, it did allow the app to show its capabilities, a success for public users. While some regions already have the app installed in their devices through Wireless Emergency Alerts, the same system that warns users of national emergencies and AMBER alerts, the public is advised to turn on their location and their notifications on their cellular devices to ensure that messages from ShakeApp will come through to their devices. But even with the app's great success, governmenticials, researchers and developers alike are hoping to improve their technology to predict earthquakes at a much quicker rate than a few seconds. Regarding the app's progress, Brian Ferguson, a spokesman for the California Governor's iceofEmergencyServices, stated his gratitude for the technology, Even if it's just a few seconds, those could be live-saving seconds.
